Nigerian soldiers ambush Boko Haram fighters, kill nine – Official

Nigerian soldiers Wednesday successfully ambushed Boko Haram fighters killing nine of them, an official said.

Army spokesperson, Sagir Musa, said the ambush occurred at Mainok-Jakana axis in Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.

Mr Musa, in a statement, said the operation took place at about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

“So far, nine Boko Haram terrorists have lost their lives, two gun trucks mounted with anti- aircraft guns have been captured and exploitation is ongoing by the troops.

“Two soldiers are slightly wounded and the situation in the area has been normalised,” he said.

The Boko Haram insurgency in Northern Nigeria has caused the death of tens of thousands of people and the displacement of millions of others, mainly in Northeastern Nigeria.

The terrorists, who seek an Islamic caliphate in Northern Nigeria, have been restricted to Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states by the security forces since 2016.

Kaduna records two more deaths from coronavirus

The Kaduna State Government says it has recorded two more COVID-19 related deaths. Governor Nasir El-Rufai  stated this in a tweet on his verified Twitter handle, adding that the two latest fatalities included a senior citizen from Makarfi and a lady from Zaria. In the tweet, released at 11.04 p.m. on Saturday, the governor revealed that two more persons had tested positive in the state, bringing the active COVID-19 cases to 87. He said the two new cases were a male from Igabi and a female from Chikun Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state. The state recorded its first reported COVID-19 related deaths on May 2, when a patient, a retired civil servant, who reportedly concealed his travel history to Kano, died before the result of his test was out. Zamfara police partner ex-bandits, rescue 12 kidnap victims – Official

The police command in Zamfara has rescued 12 kidnap victims through the collaboration of repentant bandits in the state. This was contained in a statement signed by Shehu Mohammed, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state and made available to newsmen in Gusau on Thursday. Mr Mohammed said that the victims who were kidnapped from Farar Kasa and Sabon Birni villages, were rescued two weeks after with the assistance of the repentant bandits. According to him, the repentant bandits assisted the police in trailing the abductors to their hideouts. He said that the Commissioner of Police, Usman Nagogo, while handing over the victims to the Zamfara State Commissioner of Security and Home Affairs, Abubakar Dauran, commended the repentant bandits for keeping to their promise in supporting  Governor Bello Matawalle ’s peace and reconciliation initiative.
